Chapter 6
The Shelf
Walter âWoodyâ Greenwood was the sweetest, unassuming man living around Newfound Lake. He ran the food bank for the Newfound area and was an exemplary volunteer anytime volunteers were needed. In recent memory, Rebecca could recall seeing Woody registering runners at the New Hampshire Marathon, and she heard that he worked at the Turkey Trot as well. She liked to think of herself as a good citizen, but she had nothing on Woody.
The visit from Ned had been valuable. She knew more details about what went on behind that door than she had learned from Kenny, and that gave her some background to compare with Woodyâs story, if there even was a story. Rebecca, however, was now terribly behind for a Saturday.
She was bombarded shortly after Ned left with a slew of patrons ranging the whole life cycle. Some people were looking for books to physically chew on while others wanted books to metaphorically chew on. She helped everyone find what they needed and picked away at getting the books from the drop box checked in and returned to the proper shelves. By the time Mary arrived at noon, she was exhausted.
âMary, do you still volunteer at the food bank for holidays and special events?â Rebecca asked as soon as Mary was behind the counter. The food bank was open on Saturdays, but Rebecca would still be at the library when they closed. âI havenât heard you talk about it in a while. I figured maybe youâd have worked a Thanksgiving event.â
âGood afternoon, dear. How was the event last night with the girls?â Mary was not one to be steamrolled. Pleasantries were to be observed before jumping into other topics, unless she was already up to date with recent developements. Since nothing would have been in the paper yet and she wasnât at Santaâs Village last night, Mary would be unaware of the events of the past twenty hours.
âThe girls had a great time, thank you for asking.â Rebecca paused to breathe, forcing herself to slow down. âI wanted to let you know, though, that I already brought your cookie donation in last night.â
âWhy would you do a thing like that? I thought you were donating Friday night, mine were for Saturday and Jeremy would cover Sunday.â She took off her scarf and coat, hanging them over the back of a chair before shuffling in the direction of the office where she had left her cookies.
âTheyâre not in there. You see, there was an incident last night, and my cookies were kept as evidence, so I rushed down here to get yours. I already got up this morning and baked more to donate today. Everything on the cookie front is hunkey-dory.â
Mary gave Rebecca the side-eye. âWhat kind of incident?â
âLetâs just say I was interviewed and subsequently cleared as a suspect in a suspicious death. I know, shocking.â
Mary gasped. âAre you trying to tell me someone was electrocuted?â
âNo. But I am telling you someone is dead. Marcus, from the gas station next door, was found dead in a back stairwell not open to the public.
